FAQ

Do I need my own ntfy server?

Yes. ShadowNtfy is a client for a self-hosted ntfy server: one you run on your own computer, homelab, or VPS. It does not host a server for you. Your phone and the machine your AI agent runs on both need to reach that server, for example over your home network or a VPN such as Tailscale. The setup page has a prompt your AI agent can follow to set one up.

What is the auth token, and what does "Authentication failed" (401) mean?

A ntfy server can require a token before anyone may read or publish a topic. ShadowNtfy sends the token you enter as a Bearer token. The token needs read and write access to your topic and to the same topic with -responses added, because your answers go back on that second topic.

When Test Connection shows "Authentication failed", the server answered 401 or 403: the token is missing, mistyped, expired, or lacks access to the topic. Check it on the server (for example ntfy token list and ntfy access), then enter it again in the channel. Tokens stay on each device, so a new iPhone or iPad needs the token entered once.

Why is the public ntfy.sh server not supported?

Permission requests carry the commands and file paths your AI agent wants to use, and your answers decide what it runs. That belongs on a server you control and can lock with a token, not on a shared public service where topics are open by default. So ShadowNtfy never polls ntfy.sh, and the hook installer refuses it. ShadowNtfy is an independent app and is not affiliated with the ntfy project.

I bought ShadowNtfy Pro. How do I restore it?

Open Settings in ShadowNtfy, tap ShadowNtfy Pro, then Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought it with. Pro is a one-time purchase and works on every device signed in to that account, and with Family Sharing.

Notifications are not showing up

Check that notifications are allowed for ShadowNtfy in iOS Settings, that Check for Notifications is on for the channel, and that Test Connection succeeds. ShadowNtfy checks your server itself instead of using a push service, so iOS decides how often it may check while the app is in the background. Opening the app always fetches the latest.
